The Hamburg central station is already with 540.000 passengers a day the biggest train station in Germany. This number will increase in the future even more and therefore the train station needs to be prepared.
It was required to increase this number by a minimum factor of 1,5. The Insitut for Vehicle concepts in Stuttgart developed furthermore a train which we needed to implement. The Train is capable to increase the efficiency of a stop by adding a second entrance Layer to the train.
Our goal was to not only experience the original station from 1906 in its full potential, but also develop it to a point that its prepared for the future.
This Project was made in cooperation with Cosima Rommel.
Rethinking a existing train station to increase the number of travelers does come with strong limitations. Being able to close only two tracks at once for the construction period is only one of them.
The concept of this draft is based on three factors. First optimizing the routes inside the train station. To integrate the newly developed Next Generation Train we added to layers to the existing station. One to be able to exit the train on the upper level and a second one to to not only connect each platform with a more narrow connection, but also to be able to exit the station in 10 different way rather that the four existing ones.
The openings inside the newly added Layer are designed to bring as much natural light as possible into the lower levels, but also optimizes the connecting walkways.
The third factor is that the station should be a place where you not only get to your desired destination but also be comfortable during a longer layover. You should feel welcome and not be overwhelmed do to traffic, narrow spaces and to many people on one place.
Relating to materials we decided to keep it simple and reduce the materials to concrete, wood and glass. Each one of the is used where they can fulfill their full potential by also pay attention to the environmental aspect.
The common spaces around the station store planted islands with multiple sitting areas, green spaces, a water fountain and spaces for cafes to enjoy the best weather on pleasant ground.
